Enterprise Tech News: Azure Blob Storage Capacity Upgraded, Google Released Tools To Find Crypto Bugs, Docker-Infinit Acquisition

30 Dec. 2016 Enterprise Tech News

This week’s tech news roundup features: Microsoft expands Azure Blob Storage capacity, Google releases a test suite to find crypto bugs, and Docker acquires Infinit.

Microsoft Increases Azure Blob Storage Capacity To Multi-Terabyte Range

Azure Blob Storage Capacity Massive Upgrade

Microsoft has increased the maximum file size limit of its cloud object storage service, Azure Blob Storage. The Block Blobs will now support a wider range of scenarios to meet the requirements of Azure customers wanting to store large amounts of data.

The file size limit has been increased from 195GB to a whopping 4.77TB which makes Azure Blob Storage even diverse. “The increased blob size better supports a diverse range of scenarios, from media companies storing and processing 4K and 8K videos to cancer researchers sequencing DNA,” Michael Hauss, a Microsoft Azure Storage program manager wrote in a blog post.

Along with the file size, the company also expanded the maximum allowable block size. The block size has been upgraded to 100MB from 4MB, while the limit of 50,000 block per Blob remains unchanged.

Google Open-Sources A Tool For Developers To find Crypto Bugs

Google Test Suite For Wycheproof Project

Google has open-sourced a set of security tests as a part of its Project Wycheproof. The test suite can help developers test cryptographic algorithms against known weaknesses and expected behaviors in cryptographic software libraries.

“In cryptography, subtle mistakes can have catastrophic consequences, and mistakes in open source cryptographic software libraries repeat too often and remain undiscovered for too long,” Google security engineers Daniel Bleichenbacher and Thai Duong, wrote in a post announcing the project on the Google Security blog.

Project Wycheproof is named after the world’s smallest mountain in Australia, Mount Wycheproof. Project Wycheproof provides over 80 test cases that have uncovered over 40 security bugs already. It also includes ready-to-use tools to check Java Cryptography Architecture providers like Bouncy Castle and the default providers in OpenJDK. The code for Project Wycheproof can be availed from GitHub.

Docker Acquires Infinit To Boost Container Storage

Docker's Acquisition Infinit

Docker has acquired a privately-held distributed storage provider, Infinit. It is an open-source storage platform ideal for container and micro-service deployments. It enables developers and system operators to build storage infrastructure within minutes from command line using virtual machines, containers, or bare metal machines.

Docker plans to leverage Infinit’s storage technology to provide a convenient, distributed storage layers that can integrate with its containers and existing storage offerings. However, the companies haven’t yet publicized the financial terms of the acquisition.
