Maintaining beverage line hygiene is a critical operational requirement for pubs and hospitality businesses. An Ireland-based IoT company wanted to extend its automated beverage line cleaning solution to wearable devices, reducing operators’ dependence on mobile phones during active cleaning cycles. Rishabh Software developed a smart watch companion app for watchOS and Wear OS, extending the client’s existing Flutter-based mobile solution to wearables for a seamless hands-free experience.
Project Overview
The client had developed a well-established IoT solution that automates beverage line cleaning through BLE-enabled hardware and a Flutter-based mobile application. Although the mobile app provided complete control over the cleaning process, operators frequently needed to unlock their phones to monitor cleaning progress, respond to alerts, or initiate synchronization. This disrupted their workflow during busy operating hours.
That’s where we at Rishabh Software stepped in. We collaborated with the client to develop companion apps for Apple Watch (watchOS) and Android smartwatches (Wear OS), integrated with their existing Flutter-based mobile app and reusing the same core data and connectivity logic. These watch apps let their technicians and bar staff monitor live cleaning cycles, get instant wrist alerts, and trigger syncs; all while using the same secure authenticated session from the phone, so there’s zero extra setup for the user and no separate watch login.
Challenges
- Staff had to keep pulling out their devices to see where the cycle was at, which constantly interrupted their work in fast-paced bar environments where hands-free operation is essential.
- Without wearable alerts, technicians often missed hardware errors, unexpected pauses, or BLE connection losses, which hurt cleaning reliability.
- There was no simple way to check if a cycle was running, paused, or finished without fully diving into the phone app.
- Users had to stop and open the mobile app just to trigger a data sync, even while moving around.
- Their customers used both Apple Watch and Wear OS devices, but there was no consistent solution that covered both ecosystems.
Solution
We designed and developed dual-platform smartwatch companion apps for watchOS and Wear OS. Our smart watch app development approach focused on tight integration with the existing Flutter-based mobile application, so operators could monitor cleaning cycles hands-free. Key Features Delivered:
1. Cross-Platform Wearable App Development : Developed companion applications for Apple Watch and Wear OS that integrated with the existing Flutter application while leveraging each platform’s native capabilities to deliver a consistent user experience.
2. Secure authentication : Implemented session sharing between the mobile and smartwatch applications so authenticated users could access the watch application without signing in separately.
3. Real-time operational monitoring : Provided a live dashboard that displayed device connectivity, cleaning progress, current cleaning stage, and operational status. As part of our mobile app development services, we enabled operators to monitor active cleaning cycles directly from their smartwatch without accessing their phones.
4. Instant notifications : Delivered real-time alerts for Bluetooth connectivity issues and paused cleaning cycles so operators could respond immediately without interrupting their workflow.
5. Wrist-based synchronization : Enabled users to trigger synchronization directly from the smartwatch, reducing dependency on the mobile application during active cleaning operations.
Business Benefits
- Reduced dependency on mobile devices during active cleaning cycles, allowing staff to stay focused on operational tasks.
- Improved visibility into cleaning progress through real-time monitoring and wrist-based notifications.
- Faster response to Bluetooth connectivity issues and cleaning interruptions, helping maintain process continuity.
- Delivered a consistent experience across Apple Watch and Wear OS, supporting a broader user base without requiring separate workflows.
- Simplified user adoption through secure session sharing that eliminated additional login steps.
